Homeowners are starting to see the value in spending a little money on the lesser visited rooms in the home. The laundry room is something that we typically hide away in a room far, far away. The laundry room is the room that we skip when giving a tour of the home. However, spending a few extra dollars in your laundry room can make this room pleasant, vibrant, and efficient, and it will turn laundry day from a chore into a treat.
Make better use of the space in your laundry room
The laundry room is typically reserved for the smallest and least convenient room in the home. When you’re working with a small space, you need to get creative with storage space. You’re going to need a mix of various ways to store things.
When designing a laundry room, start by making a list of all the things that you see being stored in your laundry room:
- Washer/Dryer
- Sink
- Hampers
- Drying Rack
- Ironing Board
- Counter
- Detergents
- Broom
- Mop
- Bucket
- Linens
- Towels
- Miscellaneous
Being specific about how you intend to use your laundry room will help you design cabinetry and counter space that is going to make your laundry room efficient and fabulous.
Remember, if you don’t have enough room to in the laundry to fit all these items, don’t feel overwhelmed. You will need: a) to make a priority list of those items you want to see the least – or want to hide the most.
b) go for smart storage options.
Modern and functional storage spaces
You want everything to be organized so that the detergents are close to the machines, that the drying rack is close to the countertop where you are sorting and folding.
Using shelving for detergents makes them easy and convenient to grab and makes the best sense to be located right over the washer and dryer.
- Custom design a broom closet to perfectly house your mop, bucket, broom, and vacuum
- Create large deep drawers to store towels and linens
- Create cabinets to house your laundry hampers so that the dirty laundry is out of sight, making your laundry room feel more clean and organized
Use natural light to your advantage
Create a workspace and counter space by the window so that you are working in the natural sunlight. You may be inclined to utilize the space under a window for your washer and dryer, but you’d be wasting the natural sunlight on inanimate objects, whereas letting the rays hit your face as you’re sorting, folding, and ironing laundry will leave you feeling much happier and invigorated.
Also, having a natural aeration/ventilation is a much better option than not having any.
Modernize your laundry room
Using light, warm, earthy tones will make your laundry room feel clean, fresh, and bright. You can also mix and match cabinetry, both colors, and materials to give the room more dimension and character. However, make sure everything complements each other. If you make your laundry room too busy with style, materials, and colors, you could make it feel frantic and claustrophobic.
