We Can Help You Plan Your Kitchen Makeover Properly

kitchen remodels in Colorado

Remodeling your kitchen doesn’t have to be a nightmare!

The Kitchen Showcase can assist you, to make your life a whole lot simpler during the process. Here are some helpful hints to keep in mind during a kitchen or bathroom makeover:
Complete kitchen remodel in Denver
– In the weeks before the work begins, keep a list of all those restaurants you’ve been meaning to try. When the microwave gets old, your list will come in handy for a quick escape!
– Before the cabinets arrive, decide on a safe enclosed area for the cabinets and appliances to be delivered to. Usually, the garage is a good location.
– Pack up the kitchen (or bathroom) well before the remodel. While it’s a great time to “spring clean” your shelves, don’t forget to label the storage boxes well. This will make the unpacking process a lot easier and a lot more fun! Items that are fragile should be marked accordingly and stored in an area away from the construction.
– Plan a location outside of the area where the remodeling is being done to act as your temporary kitchen.
By contacting the Kitchen Showcase and letting us know your design ideas, we can help you in achieving your goal. Our design team has vast experience in remodeling Denver homes and can share all their expert knowledge with you. So come on over and tell us what is on your mind.

How to Design and Layout A Classic Farmhouse Kitchen

The right finish for kitchen cabinets

We’ve got some great ideas for designing a farmhouse kitchen. A farmhouse kitchen can be full of antique and reclaimed materials, but you can easily add modern touches. In fact, the more you blend modern and rustic elements, the more personal your farmhouse kitchen becomes.

The farmhouse style

A farmhouse kitchen is often open, bright, warm, and functional. There are various textures and materials to make it feel both homey and sophisticated. You want to balance light colors with natural elements, brass and metal fixtures, mixed with softer elements. The farmhouse style kitchen is an open plan that has zones implemented to make it functional, but also surprising elements to make it interesting.

Natural tones with white cabinets

We often associate a farmhouse kitchen with warm wood tones all around. However, the classic white cabinets next to deep brown hardwood floors and a few natural wood tones will blend the modern, clean design with a bit of country. Adding some elegant countertops in natural stone makes your farmhouse feel both warm and luxurious.

Cheerful Colors

If you have a lot of wood elements in your kitchen and everything is becoming very earth-toned, make the kitchen a bit more cheerful by having brightly colored cabinets. But, be careful. Don’t add too many bright colors, and place them strategically so that they add a bit of cheerfulness, without overpowering the warmth and comfort of a farm style kitchen. A bit of cheerful yellow or bright red to add a pop of color can add some vibrancy to your design.

Use a lot of rustic and earthy tones and materials in a modern farmhouse kitchen.

Copper and black fixtures

Earthy elements are a staple when designing a farm style kitchen. Look at knobs and pulls for your cabinets and drawers that are made of matte black iron or copper tones. A farmhouse kitchen needs to be tough and durable, but still elegant in design. Using metals will add a strong industrial vibe to offset some of the softer, natural elements. It’s a nice contrast that will add some visual excitement.

Lighting

Look at layering your light fixtures, adding some rustic hanging lamps in copper with recessed lighting. And, remember to include spotlighting to light up certain areas that need more lights. You need extra light in areas where you are prepping and cooking. You also need to think about lighting in your cabinets to make it easier to find your things. Layered lighting, as well as different types of bulbs, can create the right mood in your farmhouse kitchen.

Personal touches and wood accents

The final accomplishment in a farmhouse kitchen is personal elements. Signs, pictures, and frames that have been handmade should be hung in the kitchen to add a “lived in” and personal touch. But, keep it simple. Choose just a few rustic elements, and try to stick to materials that go well with the rest of the kitchen. Look for things in wood or metal to go with the rest of your design choices.

Functional Spaces

Finally, the layout of your farmhouse kitchen should be open and functional. Make sure there are functional spaces where you do your prepping, cooking, entertaining, homework, etc. You want to make the kitchen a place where family and friends gather, where memories are made, but also where you can cook comfortably.

How to Make the Most of Your Outdoor Patio Space

Outdoor kitchen design

Size doesn’t matter, it’s what you can do with what you have. When it comes to interior decorating, or as in the case of this blog, exterior decorating, it’s all about how to make the most of your outdoor space. We’ve got some great decorating tips for making even small outdoor spaces feel bigger and less confined.Outdoor kitchen

Creating illusion of space

You may not have the physical space, but with a few decorating tricks, you can create the illusion that your patio area is bigger than it actually is. The trick is to create little areas that are all interconnected. You can also add layers to create height, and use colors to make the space open, bright, and welcoming.

Creating subtle boundaries

Fencing and thick hedges are a classic choice to break up your yard and create inviting spaces for lounging, entertaining, relaxing, cooking, or gardening. With smaller yards, however, you want to design similar spaces, but to keep the boundaries light. You want to design an open plan yard, where everything is one big space. A few sub-spaces should be created within the open plan using flowers, furniture, and pathways. If you make the boundaries too big, thick, and heavy you will end up chopping up your yard, making it feel even smaller and more cramped.

Continuous Pathways

Outdoor kitchens in ColoradoAnother decorating tip for making the most of a small yard is to create continuous pathways. Create loops around the garden so that it feels like there is always somewhere else to go in the yard. That way, it’s like your outdoor space is never-ending, and it will make a small yard feel bigger. Making two entryways to each section of your yard, from the patio to the outdoor kitchen to the veggie garden to the tree swing will keep a great flow of traffic throughout the yard. When you are entertaining, your guests won’t feel like they’re constantly bumping into each other or running out of places to hang out.

Design Tips for Small Bathrooms

Freestanding tub

Just because a bathroom is small doesn’t mean you can’t put some thought into the design. Smaller bathrooms require more meticulous attention to detail because each choice matters. When space is limited, you need to a special design strategy for storage.

Talk to a professional designer about the right organizational units for a small bathroom.

Functional storage space

The first thing you’ll need to think about is how to add storage space. Unless you have a free closet right outside your bathroom, you’ll need to be strategic when adding storage space. Think about function and style. Nothing in a small bathroom should be useless. It’s okay to have something that’s decorative but make it a true statement piece, not just something you threw in as an afterthought.

Layers can create more space

When space is limited, think about creating layers. Stacking things is a great use of space or a slim bookcase with organizing units on each shelf. Bathrooms will naturally attract a lot of small stuff – soaps, hand towels, toilet paper, lotion, cleaning products, shaving cream, razors, makeup, blow dryer, clippers, aspirin – that you’ll want to be able to hide in decorative boxes or other storage units. You want to try to minimize what you see but still have everything you need.

A simple trick to make a small room bigger

You can also add a large mirror to trick the eye into thinking the room is bigger than it is. This will help you not feel cramped when you are getting ready while in your small bathroom. Colors and lighting can also help brighten and open up the small bathroom.

Pick colors that match your skin tone

When you are choosing colors and lighting, think about what matches your skin tone the best. Choose colors that you look good in because you’re going to be looking in the mirror surrounded by these colors every day. Yellow is bright and happy, but if it makes your pale skin look sickly, don’t choose a yellow color for your bathroom.

Two Places Germs Love in Your Kitchen

Custom wood cabinets in Denver

Custom kitchen design and remodel Colorado

We all strive in keeping the kitchen as clean as possible. We also know that we shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. But, when it comes to our kitchen sink, we ignore all of our worldly wisdom and simply judge our sinks by their shiny polished cover. It’s time we all started to dig a little deeper and scrub those germs and bacteria out of your kitchen sink.

We wash our hands in the sink, we leave dirty pots and pans to soak in the sink. We rinse out dirty washcloths and sponges. And then when we’re done, we wipe a wet cloth or sponge around the kitchen, letting food bits and grime wash down the drain. Easy, peasy, kitchen clean.

Your kitchen sink is probably dirtier than you think. Disinfect once a day, including the drain, and the area where your sink meets the countertop.

Your kitchen sink is probably dirtier than you think

Simply wiping your sink clean after you use it is not enough to kill any bacteria that may have built up over the day. When you clean up after your dinner, take the time to disinfect your sink. Just because you can’t see dirt, just because it’s shiny, doesn’t mean it’s clean. Water and sponges are no matches for bacteria. You need something stronger to really clean your sink.

Something else that we use multiple times a day that never gets disinfected is your salt and pepper shakers. We may wipe them down with a dry cloth getting rid of excess salt and pepper, or wipe the area clean where they stand, but do you ever take some disinfectant and wipe down the shakers? You’re most likely shaking your head no. You’re not alone. We are all guilty.

Natural disinfectant to clean your kitchen

Luckily, having a spray bottle with some natural disinfectant is easy, now all you have to do is just make it part of your nightly routine to wipe down the sink and your salt and pepper shakers getting rid of sneaked germs. If you’ve got a combination of water, vinegar, baking soda, and/or lemon juice you’ve got what it takes to make your own disinfectant without hurting the environment or your delicate hands.

Which Installation Comes First: The Floors or the Cabinets

Complete kitchen remodel

A complete kitchen remodel can be a bit of a puzzle when it comes to the order of installation. Designing and picking out products is the fun part, but the installation takes careful planning. There are a few obvious things that you have to do first, but there are also upsides and downsides to each option.  Which comes first in a kitchen remodel, the floors or the cabinets?

What to install first

When we decide what to install first in a complete kitchen remodel we look at more than contractor availability, we also look at how to save time, money, and allow room for change in the future. A custom kitchen is designed for function and efficiency, and we design our remodeling installation using the same principles. When you clean, the smart thing to do is to go from top to bottom. But when it comes to installing a new kitchen, we recommend working from bottom to top. In other words, install floors before kitchen cabinets.

Floors before cabinets

Installing floors is easier if you’re working with a clean space. That means that there are few obstructions in your way. Installing the floor before the cabinets is more time efficient and easier because you won’t have to cut around the bottom cabinets. The more you have to design and cut your flooring to fit around cabinets, the longer it will take and the more it will cost.

Leave room for change

Custom cabinets
Installing the cabinets after the floors will allow you to change them in the future.

If you put in the cabinets first, you have to install your floors around the bottom cabinets. That means, if you ever want to change your cabinets in the future you’ll also have to fix your floors. You are stuck always choosing cabinets that fit the cutouts on your floors. Installing floors first will allow you to change your cabinets in the future.

Custom, Semi-Custom, or Stock Bathroom Cabinets?

Custom bathroom storage

new bathroom cabinets

What’s Right for You?

Normally, you will find that stock cabinets will fit within the framework of your bath layout unless you want to design an elaborate custom job. Usually, custom cabinets are constructed after established designs that have become quite popular. Plus these cabinets offer the most personalized alternative for a lofty price tag. That’s not to say it’s the wrong decision. Just make sure to review the sizing options of stock cabinets before assuming you need a custom cabinet.

Custom Bathroom Cabinetry

Custom Bathroom CabinetryLocal cabinet shops will make every cabinet unique to fit your required space or needs. Everything is customizable, from the cabinet box, drawers, doors, and face frame. However, the most expensive alternative offers more design options, any size, any color, any design, and finish. Dream about it, and a custom cabinetmaker can make it real.

Semi-Custom Bathroom Cabinets

This alternative allows you to personalize certain aspects of the cabinet. You will find semi-custom cabinets in stock sizes that can be altered at 1/8″ increments. Width, depth or height can be adjusted, depending on the need. Overall, these products provide a substantial number of options and choices, but at a lower cost than custom cabinets.

Stock Bathroom Cabinets

Stores and catalogs sell cabinets in basic sizes available in width ranging from 10″-96″ in 3-inch increments. The prize is set up upon the size, color, and material type. They offer the least expensive price tag because they are produced in mass. Stock cabinets are readily available for purchase, delivery, and installation. You need to design and build around those stock sizes.
At the end of the day, you need to establish a budget for your project. What’s important to you?

Wood finish that thrives outdoors

NatureKast outdoor kitchens in Colorado
Hi-density resin looks like real wood, but won’t warp, fade, or crack in the outdoors.

Until now, outdoor kitchen design has steered clear of real wood. Wood is temperamental. Being an organic product, wood will react to changes in weather and temperature. And because this is an outdoor kitchen, you don’t have the luxury of maintaining a consistent climate to protect the materials. Using real wood outdoors will require too much maintenance to make it worth your while. But with NatureKast products, you get cabinets that imitate real wood but won’t warp, fade, or crack like real wood.

Hi-density resin system

NatureKast has come up with a hi-density resin system that is revolutionizing outdoor kitchens. The hi-density resin system perfectly replicates natural wood. Your neighbors will be astounded by your new outdoor kitchen with elegant wood cabinets that are customized to fit all of your outdoor appliances like BBQ’s, refrigerators, slide-out trash bins, and sinks.

Door styles and finishes

NatureKast has a wide range of door styles and finishes.
