How to Survive Your Kitchen Remodelling

If you want your kitchen remodeled while you’re staying home, you really want to read our tips!

You finally made up your mind, and you have taken the next step in enhancing your home’s appearance and value.
It is true that remodeling any space or room in your house is an uncomfortable situation, especially, the kitchen. It is a vital area, and we always want it clean and neat. Nonetheless, we have several tips and suggestions to share that can make the remodeling process more bearable. In the end, the reward will be fabulous.
LIU before Kitchen remodelling Denver

If you are staying home during the kitchen remodel, you might want to keep this in mind:

  1. Make a list of those places you would like to try.

You are not the only one with big plans for the holidays. There are a bunch of places and things to do in the city and all around.  If your kitchen is being remodeled, this is the perfect opportunity to try all those restaurants and hot all the fairs. So weeks before the remodeling begins, start making your list. If it’s a nicer place, book early and don’t leave busy days to chance, you will want a reservation if you want to get in.

2. Have a temporary kitchen.

You can set up a temporary kitchen in a “guest room” that doesn’t get much use. If you have small kids, you could have them share rooms while the remodeling takes place. Make it fun; it doesn’t have to feel like a sacrifice.
Your garage is a good option too if it’s insulated. The tools can be repacked, and one of the cars can sleep outside for a little while. It’s worth it if it means a place to cook, right? Surely your spouse will willingly sacrifice.

3. Freeze stuff ahead of time

Another useful tip is to cook a lot before the remodeling begins and stock the fridge and freezer with meals. You will need a meal plan for this. Going out at night is pretty fun, but nothing beats a delicious homemade dinner.

4. Fire up the Grill

LIU AFTER Kitchen remodellingTake advantage of a nice weather and fire up the grill. Nothing brings friends and family together like an outdoor meal. Make fun meals for the kids and have a couple of fun activities in line, that will get them unplugged from their mobile devices at least for a few hours.

5. Make sure no one gets hurt

Thought we’d just mention it. This may mean, communicating in advance where you’d like the installers to keep all tools and materials neatly. You may or may not want those organized and stored in your new cabinets. Communicate that clearly before it drives you crazy. Especially if you’re already using any extra space as a temporary kitchen.

6. Review appliance delivery dates

Usually, the garage is a good location to store any big boxes that might get delivered if they are not ready to be installed. It’s no biggie when a house is empty because they can even sit in a hallway. But if you’re undergoing the remodeling process while you’re still inside, a box with your new oven right across from your bedroom door, may not be your idea of ideal storage. So make sure to communicate clearly on delivery dates, to make the process as smooth as possible.
Hopefully, these tips will help you survive your kitchen remodeling if you have any questions feel free to contact us anytime.

3 Kitchen Remodeling Mistakes

There are huge remodeling mistakes that homeowners often make, such as measuring wrong, ending up with dead space between cabinets, or countertops being too long and blocking off an entryway. Or spacing your appliances, sinks, trash, cabinets, and islands wrong making it impossible to move about comfortably.
You want your kitchen to have great flow, and how you place everything in relation to each other will make a world of difference.
However, there are also tiny kitchen remodel mistakes that you may not be able to spot at first glance and that over time, will make your kitchen a place of frustration, not comfort.

1) The Right Storage Spaces for Your Kitchen

Getting the right measurements and materials for your kitchen is great for the big picture. You want your kitchen to look and feel right, and make a great impression when you walk in. But, when you start working on your new kitchen, you’ll begin to think deeper about your design choices.
Taking advantage of little design tricks for the inside of your cabinets and drawers will help make your kitchen more efficient. Using dividers inside your drawers to separate utensils, or having pullout shelves in your cabinets will help you be more organized, bringing harmony to your kitchen.

2) Cluttering on Your Counters

Kitchen remodel mistakes
Design proper storage so that you don’t end up cluttering your countertops. Credit to Infinity home collection

If you don’t organize your kitchen right, get enough storage units, enough cabinets, drawers, or shelving you’ll end up placing too much stuff on your countertops. A nice big bowl of fruit or veggies can be a beautiful decorative element, so can a few rustic jars or containers with sugar, rice, pasta, flour, etc.
But, you want to design as much custom storage space for everything in your kitchen to free it up on your countertops. After all, you’re going to need it when working in the kitchen.
If every night, you need to clear off your counters before starting dinner, pretty soon you’re going to be ordering a lot of takeouts.

3) Not Consulting Kitchen Design Experts

Review of The Kitchen Showcase

We recently completed a kitchen remodel for a couple in Colorado. They worked with our designer, Darrel, to help them make all the right decisions; and with Justin, to complete the installation of the new kitchen cabinets. Here’s what they had to say about the experience:

“My husband and I recently completed our kitchen remodel. We looked for the best cabinets for our money and a good kitchen design for a long time. We knew we found the right place when we started working with Darrel at Kitchen Showcase. We loved being able to see the many beautiful kitchen designs in your showroom to give us ideas. Darrel, our Kitchen Showcase designer, worked with us patiently and expertly.
He made all the difference. We did not want to spend an exorbitant amount on our kitchen remodel like many of our friends did. Darrel listened to what we wanted and presented great and creative ideas to us on designs that were efficient, beautiful and tasteful. We were unsure of what kind of look we wanted. He guided us through the many options and aided us in making good choices. I couldn’t be happier.
We purchased Kitchen Craft cabinets, and I am thrilled with them. They are attractive and well designed. We went with white upper cabinets and dark cherry lower cabinets. The look is clean, modern and elegant.
Our cabinets were installed by Justin from Kitchen Showcase. He is a craftsman. He is precise, capable, and detail-oriented. This is exactly what we wanted in the person who hung our cabinets, cabinet hardware and frame pieces. Everything is straight and aligned. The kitchen looks gorgeous.
I highly recommend Kitchen Showcase as the place to use for your kitchen remodel. I am very glad I found them.

How to Avoid Stains on Your Kitchen Countertop

Kitchen improvements before selling

Today, kitchens are multipurpose areas. Nowadays, they are not used just for cooking. We can spend hours in our kitchens performing different activities from cooking and eating up to studying and working on the computer. Therefore, we try to design them as practical and comfortable as possible.
Because of the constant and different uses we have for it, it is unavoidable that your kitchen countertops suffer some damage or get stained. Anything from a knife scratch to a wine spill can become a mess if we don’t act immediately.
Not all countertops are the same. You should perform different procedures and clean techniques, depending on the material your kitchen countertop is made of. Otherwise, instead of cleaning the mess, you might make it bigger.
Here are some easy tips you can apply to keep your kitchen countertops clean avoiding stains and other damages.
Greg Hammel 5

What to Do?

Regardless of the material of your countertop, you should never let any spill sit. Stuff like grease and cooking oil can harden and stick to a surface if they are allowed to dry out. Everything is much easier to clean if it is done right away.

Granite clean granite countertop

Granite is an igneous rock, and its natural properties and its wide range of colors make it a stylish choice for today’s countertops.
Never use acidic cleaning products and anything vinegar-based because it can damage granite. It is recommended only using warm water, a good amount of soap and a wet sponge or soft cloth to clean the surface.

Wood

Wood is beautiful and elegant, but it is also more fragile than stone. Always wipe up all spills quickly to prevent stains and keep countertops as dry as possible. A good habit is rubbing linseed or mineral oil into the wood to protect it from moisture, about once a month or so.
You can also mix 1/2 cup baking soda in 1-quart warm water. Rub the paste into the wood using a synthetic scouring pad. Rinse well and blot up excess moisture. When dry, restore the finish by using boiled linseed oil rubbed in with a fine steel wool pad. Treat the countertop with two coats of oil, applied 24 hours apart, blotting up excess moisture after each application.

QuartzQuartz Countertop at The Kitchen Showcase

Quartz is a very tough, material. A quartz countertop should be resistant to scratches, stains, and scorches because of its polished finish. Nonetheless, avoid spills to sit in.
Clean the surface softly using mild household cleaners. Make it a point to avoid harsh cleansers, and always use a nonabrasive cleaning sponge or pad to remove any stubborn stains.

Marble

Treat marble with a specialized stone sealer to reduce its porosity, and wipe up wine, fruit juice, and other acidic food spills immediately to prevent permanent surface etching. Abrasive cleaners will mark the surface of marble, and oil polish and soft waxes may discolor it.
While many commercial cleaners are available, borax rubbed into the surface with a moistened cloth will also clean marble. Rinse with warm water and buff dry with a soft cloth.
These are only a few examples of the different cleaning options and techniques you can apply to specific countertop materials. Remember there’s no single, one-size-fits-all tip for cleaning countertops.
Follow us for more tips on how to clean steel, acrylic and other countertops made of different materials and keep your kitchen nice and shiny.

Custom Cabinets

As the name implies, custom kitchen cabinets are built to the exact specifications of your kitchen and with the materials of your choice. They allow for complete freedom over the function and layout of your kitchen, which is very appealing to many homeowners. Because they are custom made, they are usually the most expensive option and may also require a longer time to be built, two important aspects to consider in your planning process.

Semi-Custom Cabinets

Know that this option takes a step down in cost and labor time. They are also built to your specific kitchen size in mind but are pre-built in specific dimensions. The range of colors, door styles, materials, and finishes may not be as extensive as with custom cabinets, but they are significantly cheaper while maintaining high-quality standards.

Stock Cabinets

These are the least expensive types of new kitchen cabinets and come pre-made in standard sizes. We only offer the best brands in the market, so remember that being inexpensive doesn’t mean low quality for us!

Feng Shui Cures for Your Kitchen

kitchen showcase feng shui cures for your kitchen

Welcome to another chapter of our Kitchen Design Feng Shui Special. We are traveling through the ancient world of Feng Shui and are learning some basic tips on how to make our kitchen and home, harmonious spaces that support our health and well-being.
In one of our recent posts, we went over techniques to come up with the best location for your kitchen. Where it should be facing, where to place appliances and doors and which colors and material to use in your Feng Shui style kitchen. We also learned about Kua number calculation and how our energy map affects the design.
feng shui for kitchensHowever, putting the lessons into practice is really hard. The main problem many of us face when trying to design or arrange our kitchen through Feng Shui is that it takes a lot to make it work. Thankfully, the ancient Chinese wise men seemed to understand this as well and developed cures and techniques to balance the energies and bring health and good fortune into your home.

Feng Shui cures to improve positive energy

With the right use of Feng Shui, you can take advantage of the variety of cures to improve your energies, tricks that use objects, colors, materials or textures. Like different elements you can use when your kitchen is not facing the correct direction or you are forced to set a door where it shouldn’t be.

Kitchen and door cures

Your Feng Shui kitchen should not be facing the main door. If you have no choice, it is better to place it near the back door. Avoid placing your kitchen in the center of your home. Don’t forget the best location for it is in the East or South. This way you can promote the fire element. If your oven is facing a door, it is best to put a screen somewhere in between the front door and the kitchen so that the stove is not visible from the doorways.
If there is no other option than placing the kitchen in the center of the home, try energizing another area such as your living room or dining room with bright lights or music. This way you can shift the heart of your home.
If the cook’s back is towards the door, you can use a mirror or the reflection from a microwave oven above the stove, in such a way that you can see the door.
kitchens with Feng Shui design

Separating water and fire

Remember that water elements like the fridge and fires element like the stove shouldn’t be placed next to each other. If you have no choice, place a plant or something green in between. This will block and balance the energies. If you have a two-story house and the stove is directly under a bathroom, you can shine a bright light upwards to separate fire and water.

What has no cure in the kitchen design

  • Remember to avoid placing your kitchen stove in the Northwest sector. The heaven energy pours into the kitchen from the Northwest and unfortunately, there is no cure for this.

3 Preliminary Steps to Take Before Starting a Home Remodel Project

Steps to remodeling your home

Remodeling your home is an exciting time for homeowners. It’s when you get to design your dream house, making it a home. Before you get too excited about new kitchen cabinets, there are a few preliminary steps to take before remodeling your home.

Steps to a home remodel
Make sure your electrical and plumbing systems can handle new appliances.

Understanding your home

Whether you’ve just bought a home that you want to remodel, or you are updating and upgrading your old home, you need to look beyond the colors on the walls and the outdated cabinetry. Making sure that the interior makeup of your home is in good condition is an important first step to a home remodel.

Plumbing

Remodeling a kitchen or a bathroom will likely include new appliances. Energy-efficient kitchen appliances and water saving hardware and toilets may require you to upgrade your plumbing. Being energy- and water-efficient is key to a home remodel. Being energy-efficient will help you save greatly on your monthly expenses, and furthermore, it will be an attractive feature should you want to sell your house in the future.

Saving energy

Your heating and air conditioning system play big parts in energy efficiency. You may want to check your HVAC systems before starting a remodel. If you’re thinking of replacing windows and doors to help tighten up your home envelope and be more energy-efficient, this is something that makes much more sense to do before you start bringing in new furniture and products.

Painting

Preliminary steps to a home remodel
Paint your walls and ceiling before installing new cabinets.

Every remodeling project requires a fresh coat of paint. If you’re upgrading your interior design, changing up materials and getting new cabinets and hardware, you want your walls to look fresh and newly painted as well. Although installing cabinets can cause a bit of dust and a few scratches in your new paint, it is much easier to paint your walls when they are bare, before installing any cabinets or hanging shelves. You can always do a quick touch up once the installation process is completed.

Talk to our interior designers in Centennial

If you’re starting your remodel process, our interior designers can help you get organized, choose the right products, and guide your through the remodel process from start to finish. Feng Shui Kitchens: Finding Your Kua Number.

kitchen remodelling and design

Finding Your Kua Number
According to Feng Shui energy can be divided into East and West groups. Your Kua Number can determine your group and the best location for the kitchen in your home.

Welcome back to our special posts dedicated to Feng Shui Kitchens. We have been talking and discussing the mysteries of this ancient art and how to apply it to our environment, homes and more precisely, our kitchens. We don’t pretend for you to become a master in the practice of Feng Shui. But this Asian science can provide us some practical tips and techniques in our kitchen design or remodeling project.
In one of our previous posts, we presented a brief explanation about what Feng Shui stands for. We talked about where NOT to place your kitchen. So now, get ready to learn which is the best location, based on the Kua Number of the main cook or breadwinner.
Kitchens in Denver New Slider Marvella
The Feng Shui rule of thumb is to organize the kitchen based on the inauspicious direction of the main breadwinner.

Kua Number

A Kua Number is calculated by the year of birth and gender. It used to determine your four ‘lucky corners’ (your auspicious and inauspicious areas.) If we all have different energy needs, Feng Shui planning teaches us to channel those energies in effective ways to get rid of negative vibes and increase the positive. According to Flying Stars -one of the most popular Feng Shui schools- the energy of most people can be divided into two groups: East and West. A person’s Kua Number can determine which group a particular individual is in. East and West grouping is also used to indicate your best element, best season, best color and even your personality. In this ancient philosophy, it is vital where to position yourself while working, sleeping and cooking -based on your particular Kua Number

Finding Out Your Kua Number

To calculate your Kua Number, simply follow this formula:

  • Take the last two numbers of the year you were born and add them together. Reduce them down to a single digit. For example, if you were born in 1957 then you take the 57; 5+7=12; 1+2=3.

Then depending on your gender, follow the next instruction:

  • MALE – take the single digit and subtract it from 10. Example: 1957 single number of 3; 10-3=7. The Kua Number is 7.
  • FEMALE – take the single digit and add 5. Using the 1957 single number of 3; 3+5=8. The Kua Number is 8.

Once you have your Kua Number you can determine your group and the directions you should face. There are specific auspicious and inauspicious directions for each group.

  • The East Group Kua numbers are 1, 3, 4, 9.
  • The West Group Kua numbers are 2, 5, 6, 7, 8.

East Group

Kua Number              Kitchen Location
1                                        Southwest
3                                       West
4                                       Northeast
9                                       Northwest

West Group

Kua Number              Kitchen Location
2                                        North
5  (Female)                      Southeast
5  (Male)                          North
6                                        South
7                                        East
8                                        Southeast

Custom Kitchens in Colorado

Kitchen Design Based on Kua Numbers

The tricky part: if your family’s biggest income producer is part of the East Group, your kitchen should be located in the opposite group’s direction of that Kua Number. That’s because these directions are considered inauspicious and the kitchen will serve to neutralize energies. You should place your kitchen facing towards any of the West Group directions and vice versa.
Now that we have determined your Kua Number and Group, you can decide on the location and orientation of your kitchen. Next, we start thinking about the interior design of your kitchen.
